We've all seen them; the women in the fifties movies wore them; most likely someone in your past did as well. What am I talking about? The classic gingham apron, of course!
Just incase you don't already know, gingham (spelled like "ging" and "ham" morphed but pronounced as ging hum) is just a combobulated name for a checkered print. There are some variations of this, which actually border on a Plaid garment. But today we are speaking specifically about traditional gingham aprons.
So what makes gingham such a classic? Is it the fact that so many women wore them in the "oldies but goodies" era? Is it their simplicity of design? Or is it just that clean, classic look that makes gingham such a hit?
Perhaps it's the iconic image of gingham which has earned it a place in America nostalgia. Who hasn't seen a cute gingham apron hanging on a clothes line and thought wistfully of the old-fashioned home life? Or seen a cheddar topped apple lattice pie on a red and white gingham oil cloth? It's scenes like these that make the gingham pattern about as American as...well, as apple pie!
